[IJC-Announce] IJC Welcomes Dr. Charles A. Lawson as U.S. Section Secretary

The International Joint Commission (IJC) welcomes Dr. Charles A. "Chuck" Lawson as the secretary to its U.S. Section. Dr. Lawson assumes duties on July 7, 2008.
Prior to joining the IJC staff, Dr. Lawson served at the U.S. Department of State as the senior advisor for science and technology in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs. He was responsible for water and environmental issues in the Middle East peace negotiations, including the work of the Multilateral Working Groups on Water Resources and the Environment. Dr. Lawson was the U.S. representative and vice chairman of the Executive Council of the Middle East Desalination Research Center and the U.S. coordinator for the Palestinian-Israeli-U.S. Trilateral Water Working Group. He also advised the Near Eastern Affairs Bureau on a broad range of other science and technology issues.
>From July 1992 to February 1993, Dr. Lawson served as the special assistant for Science and Technology to Ambassador Richard L. Armitage, deputy to the coordinator for U.S. Government assistance to the new independent states. In this position, he advised Ambassador Armitage on science and technology matters and coordinated U.S. Government strategies for science and technology assistance to the countries of the former Soviet Union. From January 1989 to July 1992, Dr. Lawson served as the attaché for environmental, scientific and technological affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv. Dr. Lawson began his career at the Department of State in 1987 in the Office of Cooperative Science and Technology Programs, Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs, where he was responsible for cooperative science and technology activities for the Africa and Near East and South Asia regions.
Prior to entering the Department of State, Dr. Lawson was actively involved in scientific research in the geological sciences. From 1984 to 1987, he was a research geologist and project chief at the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston Virginia. From 1982 to 1984, he was a National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council Research Fellow at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Prior to 1982, he did research as a graduate student and research fellow at Princeton University and the Carnegie Institution of Washington's Geophysical Laboratory. He has published numerous scientific articles.
Dr. Lawson received his B.S. degree from the University of California at Santa Cruz and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton University, all in the geological sciences. He is a member of the American Geophysical Union, the Geological Society of Washington, and Sigma Xi.
